Halloween Cut-Out Sugar Cookies

This sugar cookie is a simple & quick version for Halloween & the Fall/Winter season. I use sweet potato for a natural orange colour & subtle but delicious flavour. Enjoy them plain or frosted. This is a great activity for the kids. Get them in the kitchen early, while having fun!

Halloween Cut-Out Sugar Cookies


  • 1/4 cup sweet potato, mashed & drained
  • 1/2 cup plus 3 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp cornstarch
  • 1/8 tsp salt
  • 1/8 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/8 tsp nutmeg
  • 1/8 tsp ginger
  • 1/4 cup butter, at room temperature
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • Icing, optional:
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 2 tbsp of milk, or milk substitute
  • 4-5 tsp corn syrup. You make need more or less. Start with half the amount.
  • Mix together until smooth and glossy.
  • Add the food colouring or none, of your choice.


  1. Mix all the dry ingredients but sugar, in a bowl. Set aside.
  2. You can make it easier on yourself by letting the cooled mashed sweet potato drain in a fine strainer, into a bowl overnight.
  3. Beat butter by hand or with a mixer, for 2-3 minutes.
  4. Add sugar and vanilla. Beat for an additional 2 minutes.
  5. Mix with flour mixture until incorporated. Do not over mix.
  6. Chill dough in the fridge, wrapped in plastic, for about 1 hour. Or in a covered bowl.
  7. Roll dough to about 1/8 inch, on a well floured board.
  8. Press out desired shapes.
  9. Bake in pre-heated oven of 350°F, for 9-11 minutes. Times will vary by oven.
  10. Cool completely on wire rack, before decorating.
  11. Or enjoy without icing.


You want the sweet potato mash to be as dry as possible. I chose to drain the sweet potato mash, so that I didn't have to add too much additional flour during the rolling process. More importantly the dough will not be too soft & sticky, when rolling.

The sweet potato will give the cookie a natural orange colour, with a mild taste. You can also use pumpkin or a squash to gain the same orange hue.
