This Pear & Apple Crisp is an easy dessert, that will fulfil most sweet cravings. Growing up & into my adulthood, my mom would always make it or a variation of it. It's a great option to apple pie, with fewer calories. Less work & time to prepare but similar in comfort level. Or should I say comfort taste?

Pear & Apple Crisp, Quick & Easy

  • For Topping:
  • 1/2 cup oatmeal
  • 1 tbsp all purpose flour
  • 1 tbsp brown sugar
  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon
  • 2 tbsp butter, melted
  • For Filling:
  • 1 large pear, peeled or not and cubed or sliced
  • 2 large apple, peeled or not and cubed or sliced
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice
  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp nutmeg
  • pinch of salt
  • 1 tbsp brown sugar
  • 1 tbsp maple syrup
  • 1/4 tsp cornstarch

  1. For Topping:
  2. Mix first 4 ingredients.
  3. Add melted butter. Mix and set aside.
  4. Filling:
  5. Core, chop or slice washed, pears and apples. You can leave the skin on or off.
  6. Toss with lemon juice.
  7. Mix in cinnamon, nutmeg, salt. Mix well.
  8. Add cornstarch, mix well.
  9. Add fruit to a lightly greased, oven proof dish. I used butter. You can use a cooking spray.
  10. Cover fruit with oatmeal topping.
  11. Bake in a pre-heated oven of 350°F, for about 35 minutes. Check at the 25-ish minute mark. If a sharp knife pierces the fruit easily, it is done. If the fruit is still hard pop it back in for another 10-15 minutes.
  12. You may or may not need the additional 15 minutes. This depends on your oven and the variety of apple and pear that you use.
  13. Serve warm or at room temperature. Great as a stand alone dessert or with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.

Some great cooking pears: Bosc or Anjou.

Some great cooking apples: Granny Smith, Fuji, Cortland or Northern Spy (my favourite baking apple!)

Some of these varieties are not available around the world.

Please ask your local grocer or farmer, what they suggest for baking/cooking, if you are at the grocery store and are unsure.

Make this vegan by using margarine or vegan butter substitute for traditional butter.

The sweeter the apple the less sugar you will need.

If you use a tart apple you may like more sugar, or not.
