Brown Rice/Split Peas/Quinoa Medley – Recipe

  • 1-2 tsp of vegetable oil
  • 1/2 cup brown basmati rice
  • 1/2 cup split peas
  • 1/2 cup Quinoa
  • 1/2 to 1 tsp all purpose seasoning. Use your favourite.
  • 1/2 tsp dried chili flakes
  • 1/2 tsp ground cumin
  • 1/2 tsp dried thyme
  • 1 small onion chopped
  • 1-2 garlic cloves, chopped or sliced
  • 3 cups of hot water. You may need it all or you may use less.

  1. Heat pan to medium high. Add the oil.
  2. Saute onions for 2 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  3. Add split peas & garlic. Stirring occasionally for 3-4 minutes.
  4. Add 1.5 cups of hot water. Stir & cover. Cook until peas are halfway cooked. About 30 minutes.
  5. If the water is evaporating too quickly, turn the heat down by 1 notch & add the needed hot water, 1/4 cup at a time.
  6. Add the rice & the seasonings. Stir. Let this mixture toast for 5-10 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  7. You are looking for the pan to start drying out & for a crust to build (not burn) on the pan bottom. This is where a lot of the flavour comes from.
  8. Add .5-1 cup of hot water. Scraping the pan to loosen the dried bits. Cover & cook until the rice is 1/2 way cooked. The liquid should just cover the surface of the rice.
  9. Add the quinoa & mix well. Add another 1/2 cup of hot water, or more. Stir & cover.
  10. Cook until quinoa is finished. About 15-20 minutes. Pan should be almost dry on the bottom.
  11. Turn off the heat. Cover & leave the Brown Rice/Split Peas/Quinoa Medley for 5-10 minutes.
  12. Serve hot & enjoy!

You can use vegetable broth instead of water. If you use a salted broth, you may want to reduce the amount of seasoned salt you use or omit it all together.
